Manchester United have reportedly expressed an interest in making an audacious move for Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier as a possible long-term replacement David de Gea.
The Red Devils are in a tough spot regarding De Gea’s future, as the Spaniard’s contract at Old Trafford will soon come to an end. While rumours suggest that the 32-year-old could agree to a fresh contract at a reduced salary.
De Gea has been an integral part of Man United since 2011, appearing in 519 matches across various competitions. His total number of appearances ranks him 10th in the club’s all-time record, right after Denis Irwin (529).
It is believed that Man United head coach Erik ten Hag is looking to acquire a goalkeeper who is more skilled in ball distribution.
The Sun has reported that Meslier is a primary target for United, with the Frenchman having a significant number of admirers at Old Trafford. According to the article, Dean Henderson will be sold once he completes his loan period at Nottingham Forest, as the Englishman is not viewed as a long-term solution for the club.
While there is a possibility that De Gea might agree to a new contract worth £250,000 per week, Man United could go for Meslier if Leeds United are relegated from the Premier League in the upcoming summer.
The 22-year-old joined the Whites in 2019 and has since appeared in 114 matches for the club across various competitions, with 96 of them being in the Premier League.
Although the Frenchman has a contract with Elland Road until June 2026, the club may struggle to retain him if they are relegated to the Championship.
