Barcelona have reportedly expressed an interest in making an audacious move for Athletic Bilbao defender Inigo Martinez during the January transfer window.
Martinez’s contract with the Spanish outfit is due to expire next June, and it appears that the centre-back has turned down the opportunity to sign an extension.
The Blaugrana were heavily linked with the 31-year-old over the summer, but a move did not materialise.
The Spain international missed the start of the 2022-23 campaign with a knee injury but has been involved in the club’s last six top flight games, including the 2-2 draw with Getafe last time out.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona could attempt to sign the centre-back during the January transfer window.
The report claims that Barca head coach Xavi is said to be a huge admirer of the Spaniard, while his ability in possession has made him a primary target for the Catalans in 2023.
Martinez has made 165 appearances for the Basque club.
